[Dynamics of fatty acid composition in erythrocyte membranes in sepsis: prognostic significance]. 1994

Noticeable shifts in fatty acid composition of red cell membranes detected in patients with sepsis were in clear-cut correlation with the clinical picture of the disease. A favorable course of the illness was associated with a moderate (by 1.5 times on an average) increase of red cell membrane saturation index, whereas an unfavorable course of the disease was parallelled by a fourfold and higher increase of this index. These results indicate the possibility of a dynamic assessment of fatty-acid composition of red cell membranes as an additional criterion in prediction of sepsis outcome.
