MRI is the current method of choice for the diagnosis of infratentorial tumors in children and adolescents. The present article discusses the individual tumor entities on the basis of their magnetic resonance imaging characteristics in the patient pool of 1991/1992. New magnetic resonance imaging procedures are considered for infratentorial vascular anomalies. In addition to its use in the primary diagnosis, the significance of MRI for the detection of recurrences is discussed. Problems arising after prior surgery and irradiation as well as metastasization through CSF pathways are also mentioned.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008279 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Non-invasive method of demonstrating internal anatomy based on the principle that atomic nuclei in a strong magnetic field absorb pulses of radiofrequency energy and emit them as radiowaves which can be reconstructed into computerized images. The concept includes proton spin tomographic techniques. D009364 Neoplasm Recurrence, Local The local recurrence of a neoplasm following treatment. It arises from microscopic cells of the original neoplasm that have escaped therapeutic intervention and later become clinically visible at the original site. D011183 Postoperative Complications Pathologic processes that affect patients after a surgical procedure. They may or may not be related to the disease for which the surgery was done, and they may or may not be direct results of the surgery. D015192 Infratentorial Neoplasms Intracranial tumors originating in the region of the brain inferior to the TENTORIUM CEREBELLI, which contains the cerebellum, FOURTH VENTRICLE; CEREBELLOPONTINE ANGLE; BRAIN STEM, and related structures. Primary tumors of this region are more frequent in children, and may present with ATAXIA; CRANIAL NERVE DISEASES; vomiting; HEADACHE; HYDROCEPHALUS; or other signs of neurologic dysfunction. Relatively frequent histologic subtypes include TERATOMA; MEDULLOBLASTOMA; GLIOBLASTOMA; ASTROCYTOMA; EPENDYMOMA; CRANIOPHARYNGIOMA; and choroid plexus papilloma (PAPILLOMA, CHOROID PLEXUS).
