Cerebral birth injury as a cause of epilepsy. 1975

L Tervilä, and E O Huhmar, and E Krokfors

The possible role of cerebral birth injury in the aetiology of epilepsy was evaluated by comparing the birth histories of 101 epileptic patients with focal seizures and 208 with non-focal seizures. The former were smaller at birth and their mothers were older and had higher blood pressures than the mothers of the latter. Although the two groups did not differ significantly with regard to the frequency of breech birth, assisted vaginal breech deliveries were significantly more numerous in the focal group. The injured half of the brain was as often pressed against the sacrum as against the symphysis during birth.

D008431 Maternal-Fetal Exchange Exchange of substances between the maternal blood and the fetal blood at the PLACENTA via PLACENTAL CIRCULATION. The placental barrier excludes microbial or viral transmission. Transplacental Exposure,Exchange, Maternal-Fetal,Exposure, Transplacental,Maternal Fetal Exchange
D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies

D001930 Brain Injuries Acute and chronic (see also BRAIN INJURIES, CHRONIC) injuries to the brain, including the cerebral hemispheres, CEREBELLUM, and BRAIN STEM. Clinical manifestations depend on the nature of injury. Diffuse trauma to the brain is frequently associated with DIFFUSE AXONAL INJURY or COMA, POST-TRAUMATIC. Localized injuries may be associated with NEUROBEHAVIORAL MANIFESTATIONS; HEMIPARESIS, or other focal neurologic deficits. D001946 Breech Presentation A malpresentation of the FETUS at near term or during OBSTETRIC LABOR with the fetal cephalic pole in the fundus of the UTERUS. There are three types of breech: the complete breech with flexed hips and knees; the incomplete breech with one or both hips partially or fully extended; the frank breech with flexed hips and extended knees.
