Radial immunodiffusion was used to determine the concentration of the third component of complement (C3) in the serum of 51 adult dogs with leishmaniasis and, for comparative purposes, in a control group of 30 healthy dogs. Animals in both groups were of different age, sex and breed. The mean concentration in healthy dogs was 93.3 +/- 6.6 (mean +/- SD), and in sick dogs 131.4 +/- 7.1, both expressed as a percentage of a reference standard. Statistically significant differences (P < 0.0004) were found between serum C3 concentrations in leishmania-infected and control groups, but no significant difference was recorded between males and females in either group.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007896 Leishmaniasis A disease caused by any of a number of species of protozoa in the genus LEISHMANIA. There are four major clinical types of this infection: cutaneous (Old and New World) (LEISHMANIASIS, CUTANEOUS), diffuse cutaneous (LEISHMANIASIS, DIFFUSE CUTANEOUS), mucocutaneous (LEISHMANIASIS, MUCOCUTANEOUS), and visceral (LEISHMANIASIS, VISCERAL). D003176 Complement C3 A glycoprotein that is central in both the classical and the alternative pathway of COMPLEMENT ACTIVATION. C3 can be cleaved into COMPLEMENT C3A and COMPLEMENT C3B, spontaneously at low level or by C3 CONVERTASE at high level. The smaller fragment C3a is an ANAPHYLATOXIN and mediator of local inflammatory process. The larger fragment C3b binds with C3 convertase to form C5 convertase. D004285 Dogs The domestic dog, Canis familiaris, comprising about 400 breeds, of the carnivore family CANIDAE. They are worldwide in distribution and live in association with people. (Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p1065) Canis familiaris,Dog

D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
