Ureteral obstruction due to compression by the vas deferens following Fowler-Stephens orchiopexy. 1993

Division of Pediatric Urology, University of Washington, Seattle.

A rare complication following a difficult unilateral 1-stage Fowler-Stephens orchiopexy resulting in ipsilateral distal ureteral obstruction is reported. To our knowledge excessive vasal traction during orchiopexy causing partial obstruction at the ureterovesical junction has not been previously described. The complication arose when the transected spermatic vessels allowed tension to be placed solely on the vas when the testis was placed in the scrotum. The vas in turn compressed the ureter during bladder filling.

D011183 Postoperative Complications Pathologic processes that affect patients after a surgical procedure. They may or may not be related to the disease for which the surgery was done, and they may or may not be direct results of the surgery. D002675 Child, Preschool A child between the ages of 2 and 5. Children, Preschool,Preschool Child,Preschool Children
D003456 Cryptorchidism A developmental defect in which a TESTIS or both TESTES failed to descend from high in the ABDOMEN to the bottom of the SCROTUM. Testicular descent is essential to normal SPERMATOGENESIS which requires temperature lower than the BODY TEMPERATURE. Cryptorchidism can be subclassified by the location of the maldescended testis. D014517 Ureteral Obstruction Blockage in any part of the URETER causing obstruction of urine flow from the kidney to the URINARY BLADDER. The obstruction may be congenital, acquired, unilateral, bilateral, complete, partial, acute, or chronic. Depending on the degree and duration of the obstruction, clinical features vary greatly such as HYDRONEPHROSIS and obstructive nephropathy.
