Although much of the understanding of the pathogenesis of ulcer disease is derived from data studying adults, there are certain manifestations and presentations that differentiate ulcers in children from those seen in adults. Therapy is aimed at reducing acid or improving mucosal defense. The recent recognition of the association of Helicobacter pylori with acid peptic disease has added to our understanding of the disease process and opened new avenues of therapy.
