The secretion of mucoproteins by the Drosophila melanogaster salivary gland cells into the gland lumen is associated with the high ecdysone content. Mucoproteins are synthesized but not discharged by these cells in ecdysone-deficient homozygous 1(2)gl larvae, as well as in normal larvae devoid of ecdysone by ligatures and transplantation of salivary gland into the imago abdomen. Ecdysone injections stimulate the mucoprotein secretion into the gland lumen.
