[Action mechanism of synthetic androgens]. 1994

Osaka Medical Center for Maternal and Child Health.

The most common androgen supplement used in Japan involves intramuscular injection of testosterone esters, such as, testosterone enanthate and testosterone propionate. As orally active androgens, derivatives of testosterone, such as, methyltestosterone and fluoxymesterone have also been used. These synthetic androgens have most commonly been used as replacement androgens in male patients with hypergonadotropic hypogonadism, as well as, hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism. The use in idiopathic male infertility and in elderly men with erectile dysfunction, however, has been shown to be less effective. Furthermore, relatively high doses of synthetic androgens are given in athletes to ensure success in sports and are used as hormonal methods for male contraception.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D011506 Proteins Linear POLYPEPTIDES that are synthesized on RIBOSOMES and may be further modified, crosslinked, cleaved, or assembled into complex proteins with several subunits. The specific sequence of AMINO ACIDS determines the shape the polypeptide will take, during PROTEIN FOLDING, and the function of the protein. D005260 Female Females
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D013091 Spermatogenesis The process of germ cell development in the male from the primordial germ cells, through SPERMATOGONIA; SPERMATOCYTES; SPERMATIDS; to the mature haploid SPERMATOZOA. Spermatocytogenesis,Spermiogenesis
D013733 Testicular Diseases Pathological processes of the TESTIS. Disease, Testicular,Diseases, Testicular,Testicular Disease
D013739 Testosterone A potent androgenic steroid and major product secreted by the LEYDIG CELLS of the TESTIS. Its production is stimulated by LUTEINIZING HORMONE from the PITUITARY GLAND. In turn, testosterone exerts feedback control of the pituitary LH and FSH secretion. Depending on the tissues, testosterone can be further converted to DIHYDROTESTOSTERONE or ESTRADIOL. 17-beta-Hydroxy-4-Androsten-3-one,17-beta-Hydroxy-8 alpha-4-Androsten-3-one,8-Isotestosterone,AndroGel,Androderm,Andropatch,Androtop,Histerone,Sterotate,Sustanon,Testim,Testoderm,Testolin,Testopel,Testosterone Sulfate,17 beta Hydroxy 4 Androsten 3 one,17 beta Hydroxy 8 alpha 4 Androsten 3 one,8 Isotestosterone
D045165 Testosterone Congeners Steroidal compounds related to TESTOSTERONE, the major mammalian male sex hormone. Testosterone congeners include important testosterone precursors in the biosynthetic pathways, metabolites, derivatives, and synthetic steroids with androgenic activities.
