Studies on Theileriidae (Sporozoa) in Tanzania. III. Experiments on the transmission of Theileria mutans by Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Amblyomma variegatum (Acarina, Ixodidae). 1976

G Uilenberg, and B E Schreuder, and C Mpangala

The parasite considered to be Theileria mutans in East Africa could not be transmitted transstadially by Rhipicephalus appendiculatus (seven attempts); it was transmitted by Amblyomma variegatum in 6 out of 7 experiments. The possibility that the original South African T. mutans, transmissible by R. appendiculatus, and the parasite called T. mutans in East Africa, are different species, has to be considered.

D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. Animal,Metazoa,Animalia
D001096 Arachnid Vectors Members of the class Arachnida, especially SPIDERS; SCORPIONS; MITES; and TICKS; which transmit infective organisms from one host to another or from an inanimate reservoir to an animate host. Arachnid Vector,Vector, Arachnid,Vectors, Arachnid
D013636 Tanzania A republic in eastern Africa, south of UGANDA and north of MOZAMBIQUE. Its capital is Dar es Salaam. It was formed in 1964 by a merger of the countries of TANGANYIKA and ZANZIBAR. Tanganyika,Zanzibar,United Republic of Tanzania
D013801 Theileriasis Infection of cattle, sheep, or goats with protozoa of the genus THEILERIA. This infection results in an acute or chronic febrile condition. Corridor Disease,East Coast Fever,Theileriosis,Coast Fever, East,Disease, Corridor,Fever, East Coast,Theileriases,Theilerioses
D013987 Ticks Blood-sucking acarid parasites of the order Ixodida comprising two families: the softbacked ticks (ARGASIDAE) and hardbacked ticks (IXODIDAE). Ticks are larger than their relatives, the MITES. They penetrate the skin of their host by means of highly specialized, hooked mouth parts and feed on its blood. Ticks attack all groups of terrestrial vertebrates. In humans they are responsible for many TICK-BORNE DISEASES, including the transmission of ROCKY MOUNTAIN SPOTTED FEVER; TULAREMIA; BABESIOSIS; AFRICAN SWINE FEVER; and RELAPSING FEVER. D016782 Apicomplexa A phylum of unicellular parasitic EUKARYOTES characterized by the presence of complex apical organelles generally consisting of a conoid that aids in penetrating host cells, rhoptries that possibly secrete a proteolytic enzyme, and subpellicular microtubules that may be related to motility.
