Spontaneous Frenkelia infection in a laboratory-reared rat. 1976

D W Hayden, and N W King, and A S Murthy

Numerous, lobulated, thin-walled protozoan cysts were found in the brain and cervical spinal cord of a male Fischer rat with granulomatous encephalitis. The cysts were compartmented, 470-1000 mum in diameter, and packed with crescent-shaped organisms. Light- and electron-microscopic features of the organism were characteristic of the protozoan Frenkelia, a parasite usually found in the brain of wild rodents. Many cysts were replaced by granulomas, whereas others elicited no inflammation. Perivascular and meningeal mononuclear cell infiltrates and gliosis were common.

D001921 Brain The part of CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM that is contained within the skull (CRANIUM). Arising from the NEURAL TUBE, the embryonic brain is comprised of three major parts including PROSENCEPHALON (the forebrain); MESENCEPHALON (the midbrain); and RHOMBENCEPHALON (the hindbrain). The developed brain consists of CEREBRUM; CEREBELLUM; and other structures in the BRAIN STEM. Encephalon
D004660 Encephalitis Inflammation of the BRAIN due to infection, autoimmune processes, toxins, and other conditions. Viral infections (see ENCEPHALITIS, VIRAL) are a relatively frequent cause of this condition. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
