[Course of thyroxinemia during the development of the chick embryo. Influence of hypophysectomy]. 1976

N Daugeras-Bernard, and J Leloup, and F Lachiver

Plasma thyroxine (T4) level of intact and hypophysectomized Chick embryos has been determined for the incubation interval 10 to 18 days. T4, which is the main circulating thyroid hormone, exists as early as day 10. The plasma T4 level of controls increases as power function of time from day 10 to day 17. Hypophysectomy (on day 2) produces a decrease of the plasma T4 level, but only from day 11, which accounts for the beginning of a pituitary control of the thyroid secretion after day 10.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007016 Hypophysectomy Surgical removal or destruction of the hypophysis, or pituitary gland. (Dorland, 28th ed) Hypophysectomies
D010902 Pituitary Gland A small, unpaired gland situated in the SELLA TURCICA. It is connected to the HYPOTHALAMUS by a short stalk which is called the INFUNDIBULUM. D011863 Radioimmunoassay Classic quantitative assay for detection of antigen-antibody reactions using a radioactively labeled substance (radioligand) either directly or indirectly to measure the binding of the unlabeled substance to a specific antibody or other receptor system. Non-immunogenic substances (e.g., haptens) can be measured if coupled to larger carrier proteins (e.g., bovine gamma-globulin or human serum albumin) capable of inducing antibody formation. Radioimmunoassays
D002642 Chick Embryo The developmental entity of a fertilized chicken egg (ZYGOTE). The developmental process begins about 24 h before the egg is laid at the BLASTODISC, a small whitish spot on the surface of the EGG YOLK. After 21 days of incubation, the embryo is fully developed before hatching. Embryo, Chick,Chick Embryos,Embryos, Chick
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. Animal,Metazoa,Animalia
D013974 Thyroxine The major hormone derived from the thyroid gland. Thyroxine is synthesized via the iodination of tyrosines (MONOIODOTYROSINE) and the coupling of iodotyrosines (DIIODOTYROSINE) in the THYROGLOBULIN. Thyroxine is released from thyroglobulin by proteolysis and secreted into the blood. Thyroxine is peripherally deiodinated to form TRIIODOTHYRONINE which exerts a broad spectrum of stimulatory effects on cell metabolism.
