Reserpine induced supersensitivity to isoprenaline on the blood pressure and heart rate of anaesthetized rabbits. 1976

C K Khatri, and A Qayum, and S M Yusuf

Reserpine, when administered intraperitoneally in 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg/kg doses, produced a decrease in the mean blood pressure and heart rate of the pentobarbitone anaesthetized rabbits. In these animals reserpine pretreatment produced supersensitivity to the hypotensive and positive chronotropic effects of isoprenaline.

D011817 Rabbits A burrowing plant-eating mammal with hind limbs that are longer than its fore limbs. It belongs to the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha, and in contrast to hares, possesses 22 instead of 24 pairs of chromosomes. D012110 Reserpine An alkaloid found in the roots of Rauwolfia serpentina and R. vomitoria. Reserpine inhibits the uptake of norepinephrine into storage vesicles resulting in depletion of catecholamines and serotonin from central and peripheral axon terminals. It has been used as an antihypertensive and an antipsychotic as well as a research tool, but its adverse effects limit its clinical use.
