Since 1990 there has been a slight increase in the number of cases of tuberculosis in Norway. Tuberculosis can affect the skin with or without apparent involvement of internal organs. A case of lupus vulgaris in a 13 year-old male Vietnamese refugee is described. The Pirquet test was strongly positive. However, no involvement of lungs or other internal organs was found. Clinical remission was achieved using isoniazide and rifampicin.

In susceptible organisms it inhibits DNA-dependent RNA polymerase activity by forming a stable complex with the enzyme. It thus suppresses the initiation of RNA synthesis. Rifampin is bactericidal, and acts on both intracellular and extracellular organisms.
