[A new therapeutic principle in hepatic coma: parenteral supply of neutral amino acids]. 1976

The effect of two different amino acid solutions given i.v. was investigated in dogs with hepatic encephalopathy after portacaval shunt. The results suggest that (a) isocaloric protein-free nutrition has no impact on the characteristic plasma amino-gram, (b) the infusion of modified concentrations of 6 neutral amino acids may reduce mortality and morbidity in dogs with hepatic coma, and (c) manipulation and normalization of plasma amino acids may be efficacious in providing adequate nutrition while minimizing hepatic encephalopathy.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010288 Parenteral Nutrition The administering of nutrients for assimilation and utilization by a patient who cannot maintain adequate nutrition by enteral feeding alone. Nutrients are administered by a route other than the alimentary canal (e.g., intravenously, subcutaneously). D004285 Dogs The domestic dog, Canis familiaris, comprising about 400 breeds, of the carnivore family CANIDAE. They are worldwide in distribution and live in association with people. (Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p1065) Canis familiaris,Dog
D006501 Hepatic Encephalopathy A syndrome characterized by central nervous system dysfunction in association with LIVER FAILURE, including portal-systemic shunts. Clinical features include lethargy and CONFUSION (frequently progressing to COMA); ASTERIXIS; NYSTAGMUS, PATHOLOGIC; brisk oculovestibular reflexes; decorticate and decerebrate posturing; MUSCLE SPASTICITY; and bilateral extensor plantar reflexes (see REFLEX, BABINSKI). ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY may demonstrate triphasic waves. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
