OBJECTIVE This study was undertaken to determine the anatomic effectiveness of scleral buckling on eyes with stages 4A, 4B, and 5 retinopathy of prematurity. METHODS Seventy eyes of 44 infants had scleral buckling performed by one surgeon and were followed for at least 6 months. All except one child had previous bilateral peripheral ablation (cryo/laser). RESULTS Twelve (70%) of 17 stage 4A eyes, 29 (67%) of 43 stage 4B eyes, and 4 (40%) of 10 stage 5 eyes had complete retinal reattachment or dry folds attached at their last follow-up visit. All eyes referred as stage 5 retinopathy of prematurity that reattached had a rhegmatogenous component. CONCLUSIONS Scleral buckling appears to play a role in reducing progression from stage 4 to stage 5 retinopathy of prematurity.

D011379 Prognosis A prediction of the probable outcome of a disease based on a individual's condition and the usual course of the disease as seen in similar situations. Prognostic Factor,Prognostic Factors,Factor, Prognostic,Factors, Prognostic,Prognoses
D012163 Retinal Detachment Separation of the inner layers of the retina (neural retina) from the pigment epithelium. Retinal detachment occurs more commonly in men than in women, in eyes with degenerative myopia, in aging and in aphakia. It may occur after an uncomplicated cataract extraction, but it is seen more often if vitreous humor has been lost during surgery. D005865 Gestational Age The age of the conceptus, beginning from the time of FERTILIZATION. In clinical obstetrics, the gestational age is often estimated from the onset of the last MENSTRUATION which is about 2 weeks before OVULATION and fertilization. It is also estimated to begin from fertilization, estrus, coitus, or artificial insemination.
