[Gastric banding. A follow-up study]. 1993

During the period 1983-1988, 54 patients had gastric banding performed for the treatment of severe obesity. The follow-up time was a median of 60 months, over which time ten patients had the band removed. An enquiry showed that only 17 of 39 were satisfied with the result. Due to the late complications, unstable weight loss and many daily inconveniences associated with this operational procedure, it is concluded that it can no longer be recommended.
