Profound heart failure, such as acute myocardial infarction with cardiogenic shock and postcardiotomy ventricular failure, requires mechanical circulatory support when recent medical treatment is ineffective. Intra-aortic balloon pumping, venoarterial bypass, cardiopulmonary bypass, left ventricular bypass, biventricular bypass and left ventricular assist device are commonly used circulatory support methods. Type selection and application timing of circulatory supports, based on the understanding of type of cardiac failure, respiratory function and other organ conditions, appears to be most important for successful treatment of profound heart failure.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007423 Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumping Counterpulsation in which a pumping unit synchronized with the patient's electrocardiogram rapidly fills a balloon in the aorta with helium or carbon dioxide in early diastole and evacuates the balloon at the onset of systole. As the balloon inflates, it raises aortic diastolic pressure, and as it deflates, it lowers aortic systolic pressure. The result is a decrease in left ventricular work and increased myocardial and peripheral perfusion. D002315 Cardiopulmonary Bypass Diversion of the flow of blood from the entrance of the right atrium directly to the aorta (or femoral artery) via an oxygenator thus bypassing both the heart and lungs. D006333 Heart Failure A heterogeneous condition in which the heart is unable to pump out sufficient blood to meet the metabolic need of the body. Heart failure can be caused by structural defects, functional abnormalities (VENTRICULAR DYSFUNCTION), or a sudden overload beyond its capacity. Chronic heart failure is more common than acute heart failure which results from sudden insult to cardiac function, such as MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION. D006336 Heart Massage Rhythmic compression of the heart by pressure applied manually over the sternum (closed heart massage) or directly to the heart through an opening in the chest wall (open heart massage). It is done to reinstate and maintain circulation. (Dorland, 28th ed) Cardiac Massage,Cardiac Massages,Heart Massages,Massage, Cardiac,Massage, Heart,Massages, Cardiac,Massages, Heart
D006354 Heart, Artificial A pumping mechanism that duplicates the output, rate, and blood pressure of the natural heart. It may replace the function of the entire heart or a portion of it, and may be an intracorporeal, extracorporeal, or paracorporeal heart.
