Study of aldosterone levels in plasma during pregnancy. 1977

T C Smeaton, and G J Andersen, and I S Fulton

A method for the estimation of unconjugated aldosterone in the plasma of pregnant women has been developed. The method is suited to routine analysis of a large number of samples, both from pregnant and non-pregnant subjects. An ethyl acetate extract of plasma is oxidized with sodium periodate to destroy interfering lipids and corticosteroids. Aldosterone is quantitatively converted to aldosteroid-gamma-lactone which is estimated by radioimmunoassay. The method has high specificity and an overall recovery of 80 +/- 5%. The method has been used to establish circulating levels of aldosterone during pregnancy and the menstrual cycle. In early pregnancy, levels of aldosterone were 2-3 times higher than in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle and a further significant rise occurred at the beginning of the third trimester. No correlation could be detected between plasma aldoserone and plasma progesterone, nor between plasma aldosterone and the birth weight of the baby. Plasma aldosterone levels in women who subsequently developed hypertension were no different from those in women who remained normal throughout pregnancy.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D006973 Hypertension Persistently high systemic arterial BLOOD PRESSURE. Based on multiple readings (BLOOD PRESSURE DETERMINATION), hypertension is currently defined as when SYSTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently greater than 140 mm Hg or when DIASTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently 90 mm Hg or more. Blood Pressure, High,Blood Pressures, High,High Blood Pressure,High Blood Pressures
D008598 Menstruation The periodic shedding of the ENDOMETRIUM and associated menstrual bleeding in the MENSTRUAL CYCLE of humans and primates. Menstruation is due to the decline in circulating PROGESTERONE, and occurs at the late LUTEAL PHASE when LUTEOLYSIS of the CORPUS LUTEUM takes place.
D008722 Methods A series of steps taken in order to conduct research. Techniques,Methodological Studies,Methodological Study,Procedures,Studies, Methodological,Study, Methodological,Method,Procedure,Technique
D010298 Parity The number of offspring a female has borne. It is contrasted with GRAVIDITY, which refers to the number of pregnancies, regardless of outcome. Multiparity,Nulliparity,Primiparity,Parity Progression Ratio,Parity Progression Ratios,Ratio, Parity Progression,Ratios, Parity Progression
D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies
D011249 Pregnancy Complications, Cardiovascular The co-occurrence of pregnancy and a cardiovascular disease. The disease may precede or follow FERTILIZATION and it may or may not have a deleterious effect on the pregnant woman or FETUS. Cardiovascular Pregnancy Complications,Complications, Cardiovascular Pregnancy,Pregnancy, Cardiovascular Complications,Cardiovascular Pregnancy Complication,Complication, Cardiovascular Pregnancy,Pregnancies, Cardiovascular Complications,Pregnancy Complication, Cardiovascular
D011374 Progesterone The major progestational steroid that is secreted primarily by the CORPUS LUTEUM and the PLACENTA. Progesterone acts on the UTERUS, the MAMMARY GLANDS and the BRAIN. It is required in EMBRYO IMPLANTATION; PREGNANCY maintenance, and the development of mammary tissue for MILK production. Progesterone, converted from PREGNENOLONE, also serves as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of GONADAL STEROID HORMONES and adrenal CORTICOSTEROIDS. D005260 Female Females
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000450 Aldosterone A hormone secreted by the ADRENAL CORTEX that regulates electrolyte and water balance by increasing the renal retention of sodium and the excretion of potassium. Aldosterone, (+-)-Isomer,Aldosterone, (11 beta,17 alpha)-Isomer
