A critical evaluation of tests used to assess gestational age. 1977

R F Harrison, and A P Roberts, and S Campbell

The reliability of eight methods for estimating gestational age in the third trimester of pregnancy has been assessed in patients with fetuses of known maturity. Late ultrasound cephalometry, amniotic fluid creatinine estimations and lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio were found to be significantly more reliable than the other five methods. The mean of estimated gestational ages provided by the three techniques used in combination gave a significantly more accurate prediction of fetal age than any single test and allowed formation of a 'maturity profile'.

D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies
D011263 Pregnancy Trimester, Third The last third of a human PREGNANCY, from the beginning of the 29th through the 42nd completed week (197 to 294 days) of gestation. D005865 Gestational Age The age of the conceptus, beginning from the time of FERTILIZATION. In clinical obstetrics, the gestational age is often estimated from the onset of the last MENSTRUATION which is about 2 weeks before OVULATION and fertilization. It is also estimated to begin from fertilization, estrus, coitus, or artificial insemination. D000653 Amniotic Fluid A clear, yellowish liquid that envelopes the FETUS inside the sac of AMNION. In the first trimester, it is likely a transudate of maternal or fetal plasma. In the second trimester, amniotic fluid derives primarily from fetal lung and kidney. Cells or substances in this fluid can be removed for prenatal diagnostic tests (AMNIOCENTESIS). D013109 Sphingomyelins A class of sphingolipids found largely in the brain and other nervous tissue. They contain phosphocholine or phosphoethanolamine as their polar head group so therefore are the only sphingolipids classified as PHOSPHOLIPIDS. Sphingomyelin
