Krankenhaus für Psychotherapie und Psychosomatische Medizin des Landes Niedersachsen, Tiefenbrunn, bei Göttingen.

This is a preliminary study on the qualitative evaluation of inpatient psychotherapy by means of a semistandardized interview at the end of treatment. The interview focus is on the patients' attitude, fantasy of cure and view of achieved progress. These components are formulated in a metaphoric, every-day-language which are set in relation to the patient's quantitative evaluation of treatment. Experience of therapy appears as consistently embedded in, and depending from the patient's lay theory of cure, which also determines his measure of outcome. Obviously, an important dimension of psychotherapeutic interaction can be described as "negotiating" the lay theory of cure.
