OBJECTIVE The authors previously showed that barium does not interfere with abdominal sonography performed after a biphasic upper gastrointestinal tract examination. This study was designed to assess the impact of a barium enema (BE) examination on the quality of abdominal sonography performed immediately after the barium enema. METHODS Forty patients scheduled for routine barium enemas (22 air contrast and 18 solid column) were prospectively examined with abdominal sonography before and after their BEs. The resulting 80 sonograms were randomized; three radiologists blindly assessed the quality of images of each of six anatomic areas (aorta, pancreas, porta hepatis, gallbladder, and the right and left lobes of the liver). RESULTS There was no statistically significant degradation of the images for the right and left lobes of the liver and the pancreas. However, the images for the gallbladder, porta hepatis, and aorta had a statistically significant (P < .05) degradation of their ultrasound quality following barium enema. CONCLUSIONS Unlike upper gastrointestinal tract examination, BE examination does interfere with the quality of a subsequent abdominal ultrasonography. Thus, when both studies are required, sonography should be performed first.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008099 Liver A large lobed glandular organ in the abdomen of vertebrates that is responsible for detoxification, metabolism, synthesis and storage of various substances. Livers
D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D010179 Pancreas A nodular organ in the ABDOMEN that contains a mixture of ENDOCRINE GLANDS and EXOCRINE GLANDS. The small endocrine portion consists of the ISLETS OF LANGERHANS secreting a number of hormones into the blood stream. The large exocrine portion (EXOCRINE PANCREAS) is a compound acinar gland that secretes several digestive enzymes into the pancreatic ductal system that empties into the DUODENUM.
D011446 Prospective Studies Observation of a population for a sufficient number of persons over a sufficient number of years to generate incidence or mortality rates subsequent to the selection of the study group. Prospective Study,Studies, Prospective,Study, Prospective
D004733 Enema Insertion of a solution or compound through the RECTUM with the purpose of cleansing the COLON or for diagnostic procedures. Enemata,Enemas,Enematas
D005704 Gallbladder A storage reservoir for BILE secretion. Gallbladder allows the delivery of bile acids at a high concentration and in a controlled manner, via the CYSTIC DUCT to the DUODENUM, for degradation of dietary lipid. Gallbladders
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000005 Abdomen That portion of the body that lies between the THORAX and the PELVIS. Abdomens
D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
