A lethal case of atlantoaxial dislocation in a 56-year-old woman with Down's syndrome. 1995

A case of fatal atlantoaxial dislocation is reported in a 56-year-old woman with Down's syndrome. The literature indicates such a case to be a rarity; however, this may be a result of the predominance of younger age samples. The implications of this are discussed.

Cardiac and gastrointestinal malformations, a marked increase in the incidence of LEUKEMIA, and the early onset of ALZHEIMER DISEASE are also associated with this condition. Pathologic features include the development of NEUROFIBRILLARY TANGLES in neurons and the deposition of AMYLOID BETA-PROTEIN, similar to the pathology of ALZHEIMER DISEASE.
