Elasticity of frozen aortic valve homografts. 1977

R Parker, and K Nandakumaran, and N Al-Janabi, and D N Ross

Homograft aortic valves were treated and stored in different ways and then tested for elastic qualities. It appears from the findings that the most satisfactory long-term storage technique is to flash-freeze the valves in the presence of dimethyl sulphoxide immediately after dissection.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009926 Organ Preservation The process by which organs are kept viable outside of the organism from which they were removed (i.e., kept from decay by means of a chemical agent, cooling, or a fluid substitute that mimics the natural state within the organism). Organ Preservations,Preservation, Organ,Preservations, Organ
D004121 Dimethyl Sulfoxide A highly polar organic liquid, that is used widely as a chemical solvent. Because of its ability to penetrate biological membranes, it is used as a vehicle for topical application of pharmaceuticals. It is also used to protect tissue during CRYOPRESERVATION. Dimethyl sulfoxide shows a range of pharmacological activity including analgesia and anti-inflammation. D001021 Aortic Valve The valve between the left ventricle and the ascending aorta which prevents backflow into the left ventricle. Aortic Valves,Valve, Aortic,Valves, Aortic
D014021 Tissue Preservation The process by which a tissue or aggregate of cells is kept alive outside of the organism from which it was derived (i.e., kept from decay by means of a chemical agent, cooling, or a fluid substitute that mimics the natural state within the organism). Preservation, Tissue,Preservations, Tissue,Tissue Preservations
D014184 Transplantation, Homologous Transplantation between individuals of the same species. Usually refers to genetically disparate individuals in contradistinction to isogeneic transplantation for genetically identical individuals.
