Lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) is a LDL-like lipoprotein with an additional highly polymorphic glycoprotein--apolipoprotein (a) (apo(a)). Apo(a) bears great homology with plasminogen. Lp(a) is synthesized by liver and its degradation may be carried out by a nonspecific process. Apo(a) isoform size and plasma Lp(a) levels are mainly determined by apo(a) gene. Lp(a) can easily be deposited in arterial wall. It promotes growth of smooth muscle cells and inhibits fibrinolysis. These could be the mechanisms by which Lp(a) accelerates atherosclerosis and thrombosis. The physiological role of Lp(a) has not been clearly understood.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D011110 Polymorphism, Genetic The regular and simultaneous occurrence in a single interbreeding population of two or more discontinuous genotypes. The concept includes differences in genotypes ranging in size from a single nucleotide site (POLYMORPHISM, SINGLE NUCLEOTIDE) to large nucleotide sequences visible at a chromosomal level. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D001054 Apolipoproteins A Structural proteins of the alpha-lipoproteins (HIGH DENSITY LIPOPROTEINS), including APOLIPOPROTEIN A-I and APOLIPOPROTEIN A-II. They can modulate the activity of LECITHIN CHOLESTEROL ACYLTRANSFERASE. These apolipoproteins are low in atherosclerotic patients. They are either absent or present in extremely low plasma concentration in TANGIER DISEASE. Apo-A,ApoA
D017270 Lipoprotein(a) A lipoprotein that resembles the LOW-DENSITY LIPOPROTEINS but with an extra protein moiety, APOPROTEIN (A) also known as APOLIPOPROTEIN (A), linked to APOLIPOPROTEIN B-100 on the LDL by one or two disulfide bonds. High plasma level of lipoprotein (a) is associated with increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Lipoprotein (a),Lipoprotein (a-),Lipoprotein Lp(a),Lipoprotein a
D018082 Kringles Triple-looped protein domains linked by disulfide bonds. These common structural domains, so-named for their resemblance to Danish pastries known as kringlers, play a role in binding membranes, proteins, and phospholipids as well as in regulating proteolysis. Kringles are also present in coagulation-related and fibrinolytic proteins and other plasma proteinases. Kringle Domains,Domain, Kringle,Domains, Kringle,Kringle,Kringle Domain
