Basal cell carcinoma-the most common malignant disease in man-only rarely metastasizes. The skeletal system is involved in 20 to 30% of the cases. As an isolated finding only a few cases are described. This case report presents the history of a 61 years old man, who developed 11 years after diagnosis of a basal cell carcinoma of the temple skin several vertebral metastases. Other sites of tumor manifestations could not be confirmed up to now. Clinical and histological findings as well as possible criteria for a high metastatic risk are discussed.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008279 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Non-invasive method of demonstrating internal anatomy based on the principle that atomic nuclei in a strong magnetic field absorb pulses of radiofrequency energy and emit them as radiowaves which can be reconstructed into computerized images. The concept includes proton spin tomographic techniques. D002280 Carcinoma, Basal Cell A malignant skin neoplasm that seldom metastasizes but has potentialities for local invasion and destruction. Clinically it is divided into types: nodular, cicatricial, morphaic, and erythematoid (pagetoid). They develop on hair-bearing skin, most commonly on sun-exposed areas. Approximately 85% are found on the head and neck area and the remaining 15% on the trunk and limbs. D012447 Sacrum Five fused VERTEBRAE forming a triangle-shaped structure at the back of the PELVIS. It articulates superiorly with the LUMBAR VERTEBRAE, inferiorly with the COCCYX, and anteriorly with the ILIUM of the PELVIS. The sacrum strengthens and stabilizes the PELVIS.
