Evaluating renal function: current status of clinical tests. 1977

L R Crowe, and F E Hatch

Most tests of renal function assess glomerular function, tubular function, or renal plasma flow. Glomerular function should be determined initially by measuring clearance of endogenous creatinine. Tubular function is best determined clinically by measuring urine concentrating ability of the kidney. At present, no test for measuring renal plasma flow is both accurate and readily available.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007671 Kidney Concentrating Ability The ability of the kidney to excrete in the urine high concentrations of solutes from the blood plasma. D007674 Kidney Diseases Pathological processes of the KIDNEY or its component tissues. Disease, Kidney,Diseases, Kidney,Kidney Disease
D007677 Kidney Function Tests Laboratory tests used to evaluate how well the kidneys are working through examination of blood and urine. Function Test, Kidney,Function Tests, Kidney,Kidney Function Test,Test, Kidney Function,Tests, Kidney Function
D007684 Kidney Tubules Long convoluted tubules in the nephrons. They collect filtrate from blood passing through the KIDNEY GLOMERULUS and process this filtrate into URINE. Each renal tubule consists of a BOWMAN CAPSULE; PROXIMAL KIDNEY TUBULE; LOOP OF HENLE; DISTAL KIDNEY TUBULE; and KIDNEY COLLECTING DUCT leading to the central cavity of the kidney (KIDNEY PELVIS) that connects to the URETER. D010637 Phenolsulfonphthalein Red dye, pH indicator, and diagnostic aid for determination of renal function. It is used also for studies of the gastrointestinal and other systems. Phenol Red,Sulfonphthal,Sulphental,Sulphonthal
D011866 Radioisotope Renography Graphic tracing over a time period of radioactivity measured externally over the kidneys following intravenous injection of a radionuclide which is taken up and excreted by the kidneys. Renography,Radioisotope Renographies,Renographies,Renographies, Radioisotope,Renography, Radioisotope
D001806 Blood Urea Nitrogen The urea concentration of the blood stated in terms of nitrogen content. Serum (plasma) urea nitrogen is approximately 12% higher than blood urea nitrogen concentration because of the greater protein content of red blood cells. Increases in blood or serum urea nitrogen are referred to as azotemia and may have prerenal, renal, or postrenal causes. D005919 Glomerular Filtration Rate The volume of water filtered out of plasma through glomerular capillary walls into Bowman's capsules per unit of time. It is considered to be equivalent to INULIN clearance. Filtration Rate, Glomerular,Filtration Rates, Glomerular,Glomerular Filtration Rates,Rate, Glomerular Filtration,Rates, Glomerular Filtration
