The effect of aging on bone composition of female Fischer 344 rats. 1995

Female Fischer F344 rats, ranging from 5 to 29 months of age were used to examine the effect of aging on the breaking strength and the calcium and phosphorus content of the femur. There was no significant age-related change in either the bone breaking strength, ash weight, bone phosphorus content, or the ratio of phosphorus and calcium content. However, bone calcium content, bone length and bone weight were significantly higher with age. The results show no evidence of osteoporosis with age in the female Fischer 344 rats.
