OBJECTIVE To assess alpha-1-antitrypsin concentration in blood serum of patients with melanoma of the choroid. METHODS 35 patients (14 women and 21 men) were examined. The control group comprised 12 healthy persons. Tests of alpha-1-antitrypsin level were performed using immunologicresponse produced by diagnostic antibodies with the antigen present in the studied seru. Behring Nor-Partigen platelets were used for determinations. The results were statistically analysed using Cohran-Cox test. RESULTS The investigations have shown, in patients with melanoma of the choroid, the level of alpha-1-antitrypsin amounts, on the average, to 296 75.5 mg/dl. In the control group, however, it was 219 50.1 mg/dl. The statistical significance was p < 0.001. CONCLUSIONS A considerably higher level of glycoprotein in patients with melanoma of the choroid suggests the usefulness of determining alpha-1-antitrypsinlevel on recognising neoplasms of the visual system.

D008545 Melanoma A malignant neoplasm derived from cells that are capable of forming melanin, which may occur in the skin of any part of the body, in the eye, or, rarely, in the mucous membranes of the genitalia, anus, oral cavity, or other sites. It occurs mostly in adults and may originate de novo or from a pigmented nevus or malignant lentigo. Melanomas frequently metastasize widely, and the regional lymph nodes, liver, lungs, and brain are likely to be involved. The incidence of malignant skin melanomas is rising rapidly in all parts of the world. D002830 Choroid Neoplasms Tumors of the choroid; most common intraocular tumors are malignant melanomas of the choroid. These usually occur after puberty and increase in incidence with advancing age. Most malignant melanomas of the uveal tract develop from benign melanomas (nevi).
