Vascular lesions in the orbit. 1996

Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Mayo Medical School and Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA.

Vascular lesions in the postbulbar region of the orbit include hemangiomas, lymphangiomas, dural arteriovenous fistulae, aneurysms, varices, and hematic cysts. The heterogeneous nature of the group indicates the diverse origins of the different entities. Cross-sectional imaging, including computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, is used for the majority of these lesions, although special computed tomography and magnetic resonance techniques and selective arteriography occasionally are needed for specific indications.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008202 Lymphangioma A benign tumor resulting from a congenital malformation of the lymphatic system. Lymphangioendothelioma is a type of lymphangioma in which endothelial cells are the dominant component. D008279 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Non-invasive method of demonstrating internal anatomy based on the principle that atomic nuclei in a strong magnetic field absorb pulses of radiofrequency energy and emit them as radiowaves which can be reconstructed into computerized images. The concept includes proton spin tomographic techniques. D003937 Diagnosis, Differential Determination of which one of two or more diseases or conditions a patient is suffering from by systematically comparing and contrasting results of diagnostic measures. Diagnoses, Differential,Differential Diagnoses,Differential Diagnosis
D006222 Hamartoma A focal malformation resembling a neoplasm, composed of an overgrowth of mature cells and tissues that normally occur in the affected area. Hamartomas
D006391 Hemangioma A vascular anomaly due to proliferation of BLOOD VESSELS that forms a tumor-like mass. The common types involve CAPILLARIES and VEINS. It can occur anywhere in the body but is most frequently noticed in the SKIN and SUBCUTANEOUS TISSUE.
