The importance of factors influencing blood clotting and fibrinolysis in preventing coronary events is now established. Modification of these factors is likely to be of more immediate benefit to an elderly population than factors influencing the atherogenic process. Although good evidence shows that intake of long chain fatty acids (> C12) is a major determinant of factor VIIc, little evidence supports the importance of the degree of unsaturation. The role of unsaturated fatty acids in thrombogenesis still remains controversial.
