We present an 83-yr-old woman with a history of renal insufficiency, diabetes and idiopathic purpura (ITP) who experienced recurrent hemorrhage from gastric antral vascular ectasias (GAVE). METHODS Extensive evaluation consisting of barium small bowel series, colonoscopy, abdominal CT scan and visceral angiography excluded other causes of bleeding. RESULTS After 99mTc-labeled red cell imaging to localize the bleeding to the antrum, an antrectomy was performed. Seven months postsurgery, the patient experienced no further hemorrhage. CONCLUSIONS 99mTc-labeled red cell scans can be used for the diagnosis of GAVE.

D011877 Radionuclide Imaging The production of an image obtained by cameras that detect the radioactive emissions of an injected radionuclide as it has distributed differentially throughout tissues in the body. The image obtained from a moving detector is called a scan, while the image obtained from a stationary camera device is called a scintiphotograph. D003924 Diabetes Mellitus, Type 2 A subclass of DIABETES MELLITUS that is not INSULIN-responsive or dependent (NIDDM). It is characterized initially by INSULIN RESISTANCE and HYPERINSULINEMIA; and eventually by GLUCOSE INTOLERANCE; HYPERGLYCEMIA; and overt diabetes. Type II diabetes mellitus is no longer considered a disease exclusively found in adults. Patients seldom develop KETOSIS but often exhibit OBESITY.
