[Problems of postoperative respiratory insufficiency (author's transl)]. 1977

K Borchert, and G Benad, and G Lange

Postoperatively patients are particularly endangered by the development of respiratory failure. All parts of the gas-exchange between the atmospharic air and the metabolizing cell are to be considered as a unit. The increase of dead-volume-respiration and intrapulmonary shunting is of great importance for the development of arterial hypoxaemia. Early diagnosis of impaired gas-exchange and an adequate treatment are emphasized. CPAP and intermittent mandatory ventilation are therapeutic methods, well approved in clinical practice.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010101 Oxygen Consumption The rate at which oxygen is used by a tissue; microliters of oxygen STPD used per milligram of tissue per hour; the rate at which oxygen enters the blood from alveolar gas, equal in the steady state to the consumption of oxygen by tissue metabolism throughout the body. (Stedman, 25th ed, p346) Consumption, Oxygen,Consumptions, Oxygen,Oxygen Consumptions
D010477 Perfusion Treatment process involving the injection of fluid into an organ or tissue. Perfusions
D011183 Postoperative Complications Pathologic processes that affect patients after a surgical procedure. They may or may not be related to the disease for which the surgery was done, and they may or may not be direct results of the surgery. Complication, Postoperative,Complications, Postoperative,Postoperative Complication
D012121 Respiration, Artificial Any method of artificial breathing that employs mechanical or non-mechanical means to force the air into and out of the lungs. Artificial respiration or ventilation is used in individuals who have stopped breathing or have RESPIRATORY INSUFFICIENCY to increase their intake of oxygen (O2) and excretion of carbon dioxide (CO2). D012126 Respiratory Dead Space That part of the RESPIRATORY TRACT or the air within the respiratory tract that does not exchange OXYGEN and CARBON DIOXIDE with pulmonary capillary blood. Dead Space, Respiratory,Dead Spaces, Respiratory,Respiratory Dead Spaces,Space, Respiratory Dead,Spaces, Respiratory Dead
D012131 Respiratory Insufficiency Failure to adequately provide oxygen to cells of the body and to remove excess carbon dioxide from them.
