A retrospective study of 245 patients with 299 hemangiomas treated from May 1981 to April 1994 was done. A subset of 175 of these patients (58.5%) had hemangiomas of the head and neck. Six of the 175 (3%) required reconstruction following laser therapy. Tissue expansion was chosen for each of these reconstructions. Five females and 1 male underwent tissue expansion. The age of the patients at the time of tissue expansion ranged from 2.5 to 12 years, with an average of 6 years. Tissue expander sizes were 50 cc and 100 cc. Infection was seen during the course of expansion in 1 patient. Satisfactory results were achieved after reconstruction in all cases. Tissue expansion is the treatment of choice for reconstruction of head and neck hemangioma deformities following laser or other surgical procedures as well as involution.

D006391 Hemangioma A vascular anomaly due to proliferation of BLOOD VESSELS that forms a tumor-like mass. The common types involve CAPILLARIES and VEINS. It can occur anywhere in the body but is most frequently noticed in the SKIN and SUBCUTANEOUS TISSUE. D012189 Retrospective Studies Studies used to test etiologic hypotheses in which inferences about an exposure to putative causal factors are derived from data relating to characteristics of persons under study or to events or experiences in their past. The essential feature is that some of the persons under study have the disease or outcome of interest and their characteristics are compared with those of unaffected persons. D015626 Tissue Expansion A procedure whereby the body is stimulated to generate extra soft tissue by the application of stretching forces that stimulate new growth of tissue which, over a period of time, results in a 2-dimensional expansion of the tissue. The procedure is used in reconstructive surgery for injuries caused by trauma, burns, or ablative surgery. Various types of TISSUE EXPANSION DEVICES have been developed that exert stretching forces.
