OBJECTIVE To determine the usefulness of radioaerosol ventilation scans for the detection and localization of air leaks from the lungs or bronchial tree. METHODS Selected patients with suspected air leaks underwent ventilation scans. Retrospective analysis of data was carried out. METHODS Twenty-eight hospitalized patients were included in the study. METHODS Ventilation scintigraphy using 99mTc-DTPA (technetium aerosol) was carried out in patients with air leaks. RESULTS Of the total group, there were 50% true-positive scans, 36% true-negative scans, and 14% false-negative scans giving a sensitivity of 78%, specificity of 100%, and accuracy of 86%. CONCLUSIONS 99mTc-DTPA ventilation scintigraphy is useful in some patients with air leaks from the lung or tracheobronchial tree and may help to guide surgical intervention should this become necessary.

D011877 Radionuclide Imaging The production of an image obtained by cameras that detect the radioactive emissions of an injected radionuclide as it has distributed differentially throughout tissues in the body. The image obtained from a moving detector is called a scan, while the image obtained from a stationary camera device is called a scintiphotograph. D001983 Bronchial Fistula An abnormal passage or communication between a bronchus and another part of the body. Bronchial Fistulas,Fistula, Bronchial,Fistulas, Bronchial
D005402 Fistula Abnormal communication most commonly seen between two internal organs, or between an internal organ and the surface of the body. Fistulas

D012189 Retrospective Studies Studies used to test etiologic hypotheses in which inferences about an exposure to putative causal factors are derived from data relating to characteristics of persons under study or to events or experiences in their past. The essential feature is that some of the persons under study have the disease or outcome of interest and their characteristics are compared with those of unaffected persons. D012680 Sensitivity and Specificity Binary classification measures to assess test results. Sensitivity or recall rate is the proportion of true positives. Specificity is the probability of correctly determining the absence of a condition. (From Last, Dictionary of Epidemiology, 2d ed) Specificity,Sensitivity,Specificity and Sensitivity
