Fetal umbilical venous-arterial differences of citrate in the chronically catheterised sheep. 1977

V C Char, and R K Creasy

Whole blood citrate concentration was measured simultaneously in the umbilical vein, fetal femoral artery and maternal artery in seven chronically catheterised pregnant ewes and their fetuses. The mean citrate concentration was 0-321 mmoles/litre in the umbilical vein, 0-297 mmoles/litre in the fetal femoral artery and 0-095 mmoles/litre in the maternal artery. The mean concentration difference for citrate across the fetal placental circulation was 0-024 mmoles/litre but this was not statistically significant (P less than 0-1).

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies
D002404 Catheterization Use or insertion of a tubular device into a duct, blood vessel, hollow organ, or body cavity for injecting or withdrawing fluids for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. It differs from INTUBATION in that the tube here is used to restore or maintain patency in obstructions. Cannulation,Cannulations,Catheterizations
D002951 Citrates Derivatives of CITRIC ACID.
D005260 Female Females
D005263 Femoral Artery The main artery of the thigh, a continuation of the external iliac artery. Common Femoral Artery,Arteries, Common Femoral,Arteries, Femoral,Artery, Common Femoral,Artery, Femoral,Common Femoral Arteries,Femoral Arteries,Femoral Arteries, Common,Femoral Artery, Common
D005312 Fetal Blood Blood of the fetus. Exchange of nutrients and waste between the fetal and maternal blood occurs via the PLACENTA. The cord blood is blood contained in the umbilical vessels (UMBILICAL CORD) at the time of delivery. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. Animal,Metazoa,Animalia
D012756 Sheep Any of the ruminant mammals with curved horns in the genus Ovis, family Bovidae. They possess lachrymal grooves and interdigital glands, which are absent in GOATS. Ovis,Sheep, Dall,Dall Sheep,Ovis dalli
D014471 Umbilical Veins Venous vessels in the umbilical cord. They carry oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood from the mother to the FETUS via the PLACENTA. In humans, there is normally one umbilical vein. Umbilical Vein,Vein, Umbilical,Veins, Umbilical
