Effect of pimozide on levodopa-induced growth hormone release in man. 1977

A Masala, and G Delitala, and S Alagna, and L Devilla

Serum growth hormone (GH) behaviour after levodopa administration was measured in twelve healthy subjects both in basal conditions and after a 4 day course of pimozide (4 mg daily), a specific blocker of dopamine (DA) receptors. In addition, fasting plasma GH was measured on the first, second and third day of treatment. No significant difference was found between GH response to levodopa in basal conditions and after pimozide; moreover, fasting GH was uninfluenced by pimozide.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007980 Levodopa The naturally occurring form of DIHYDROXYPHENYLALANINE and the immediate precursor of DOPAMINE. Unlike dopamine itself, it can be taken orally and crosses the blood-brain barrier. It is rapidly taken up by dopaminergic neurons and converted to DOPAMINE. It is used for the treatment of PARKINSONIAN DISORDERS and is usually given with agents that inhibit its conversion to dopamine outside of the central nervous system. D008297 Male Males
D010868 Pimozide A diphenylbutylpiperidine that is effective as an antipsychotic agent and as an alternative to HALOPERIDOL for the suppression of vocal and motor tics in patients with Tourette syndrome. Although the precise mechanism of action is unknown, blockade of postsynaptic dopamine receptors has been postulated. D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D013006 Growth Hormone A polypeptide that is secreted by the adenohypophysis (PITUITARY GLAND, ANTERIOR). Growth hormone, also known as somatotropin, stimulates mitosis, cell differentiation and cell growth. Species-specific growth hormones have been synthesized.
