Patterns of care for end stage kidney disease in Germany and the USA are similar but the utilization of living-donor kidneys in Germany is relatively low. One reason is the striking difference in approach between the two countries, with different emphasis on patient autonomy. Comprehensive information on patients and medical personnel in the USA with regard to the availability of treatment options and an attempt to enable competent decision making has facilitated all high degree of acceptance of living donation.
