Comparison of methods for the determination of total and free tryptophan in plasma. 1977

K Wood, and C Swade, and J Harwood, and E Eccleston, and M Bishop, and A Coppen

A comparison is made between two fluorimetric techniques for the determination of total and free plasma tryptophan. Comparison is also made between methods for the separation of the unbound and bound fraction of plasma tryptophan using ultrafiltration, Centricones and small-scale equilibrium dialysis.

D003956 Dialysis A process of selective diffusion through a membrane. It is usually used to separate low-molecular-weight solutes which diffuse through the membrane from the colloidal and high-molecular-weight solutes which do not. D005470 Fluorometry An analytical method for detecting and measuring FLUORESCENCE in compounds or targets such as cells, proteins, or nucleotides, or targets previously labeled with FLUORESCENCE AGENTS. Fluorimetry,Fluorometric Analysis,Analysis, Fluorometric

D014364 Tryptophan An essential amino acid that is necessary for normal growth in infants and for NITROGEN balance in adults. It is a precursor of INDOLE ALKALOIDS in plants. It is a precursor of SEROTONIN (hence its use as an antidepressant and sleep aid). It can be a precursor to NIACIN, albeit inefficiently, in mammals. D014462 Ultrafiltration The separation of particles from a suspension by passage through a filter with very fine pores. In ultrafiltration the separation is accomplished by convective transport; in DIALYSIS separation relies instead upon differential diffusion. Ultrafiltration occurs naturally and is a laboratory procedure. Artificial ultrafiltration of the blood is referred to as HEMOFILTRATION or HEMODIAFILTRATION (if combined with HEMODIALYSIS).
