GLC assay of belladonna extracts. 1976

D K Wyatt, and W G Richardson, and B McEwan, and J M Woodside, and L T Grady

Samples of belladonna pilular and powdered extract and tincture from two suppliers were analyzed by GLC as a cooperative effort between two laboratories to develop methodology with substantial improvements in sensitivity, specificity, precision, and working time over the present official method. This goal was achieved, but marked differences in response of the individual extracts to different isolation schemes were noted.

D002849 Chromatography, Gas Fractionation of a vaporized sample as a consequence of partition between a mobile gaseous phase and a stationary phase held in a column. Two types are gas-solid chromatography, where the fixed phase is a solid, and gas-liquid, in which the stationary phase is a nonvolatile liquid supported on an inert solid matrix. D001533 Belladonna Alkaloids Alkaloids obtained from various plants, especially the deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna), variety acuminata; atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine are classical, specific antimuscarinic agents with many pharmacologic actions; used mainly as antispasmodics. Alkaloids, Belladonna
D012601 Scopolamine An alkaloid from SOLANACEAE, especially DATURA and SCOPOLIA. Scopolamine and its quaternary derivatives act as antimuscarinics like ATROPINE, but may have more central nervous system effects. Its many uses include an anesthetic premedication, the treatment of URINARY INCONTINENCE and MOTION SICKNESS, an antispasmodic, and a mydriatic and cycloplegic.
