[Meta-iodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy of the heart]. 1997

H D Villadsen, and J Abrahamsen

Iodine-123 labeled metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) is a noradrenaline analogue. The tracer is thought to follow the same mechanisms of uptake into cardiac sympathetic nerve endings as noradrenaline. MIBG-scintigraphy can thus be used to noninvasively image the cardiac sympathetic nervous innervation. The uptake and distribution of MIBG in the heart are changed in various cardiac diseases, and MIBG-scintigraphy has become a new research tool especially for the evaluation of patients with myocardial infarction and ischaemia, congestive heart failure and ventricular arrhythmias. This review article focuses on the cardiac diseases where MIBG-scintigraphy has contributed to a better understanding of the pathophysiology and improved clinical evaluation of the patients.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007457 Iodine Radioisotopes Unstable isotopes of iodine that decay or disintegrate emitting radiation. I atoms with atomic weights 117-139, except I 127, are radioactive iodine isotopes. Radioisotopes, Iodine
D011877 Radionuclide Imaging The production of an image obtained by cameras that detect the radioactive emissions of an injected radionuclide as it has distributed differentially throughout tissues in the body. The image obtained from a moving detector is called a scan, while the image obtained from a stationary camera device is called a scintiphotograph. Gamma Camera Imaging,Radioisotope Scanning,Scanning, Radioisotope,Scintigraphy,Scintiphotography,Imaging, Gamma Camera,Imaging, Radionuclide
D003327 Coronary Disease An imbalance between myocardial functional requirements and the capacity of the CORONARY VESSELS to supply sufficient blood flow. It is a form of MYOCARDIAL ISCHEMIA (insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle) caused by a decreased capacity of the coronary vessels. D006321 Heart The hollow, muscular organ that maintains the circulation of the blood. Hearts
D006331 Heart Diseases Pathological conditions involving the HEART including its structural and functional abnormalities. Cardiac Disorders,Heart Disorders,Cardiac Diseases,Cardiac Disease,Cardiac Disorder,Heart Disease,Heart Disorder
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D019797 3-Iodobenzylguanidine A guanidine analog with specific affinity for tissues of the sympathetic nervous system and related tumors. The radiolabeled forms are used as antineoplastic agents and radioactive imaging agents. (Merck Index, 12th ed) MIBG serves as a neuron-blocking agent which has a strong affinity for, and retention in, the adrenal medulla and also inhibits ADP-ribosyltransferase.
