[The effect of late thymectomy and thymosin on the quantity of antibody forming cells in the spleen and lymph nodes of guinea pigs]. 1976

V F Chebotarev

A study was made of the effect of thymectomy carried out in guinea pigs aged 1 month on the antibody-forming cell (AFC) count (cells forming antibodies against sheep erythrocytes), and also the effect of thymosin on the AFC distribution in the spleen and the lymph nodes of thymectomized animals. It was shown that as a result of thymectomy the AFC content increased in the peripheral lymphoid organs, and, particularly, in the spleen. But under the effect of thymosin the AFC count in the spleen decreased and in the lymph nodes somewhat increased; this permitted one to suggest a normalizing influence of thymosin on the AFC count in the thymectomized animals.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008198 Lymph Nodes They are oval or bean shaped bodies (1 - 30 mm in diameter) located along the lymphatic system. Lymph Node,Node, Lymph,Nodes, Lymph
D008297 Male Males
D006168 Guinea Pigs A common name used for the genus Cavia. The most common species is Cavia porcellus which is the domesticated guinea pig used for pets and biomedical research. Cavia,Cavia porcellus,Guinea Pig,Pig, Guinea,Pigs, Guinea
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D000921 Antibody-Producing Cells Cells of the lymphoid series that can react with antigen to produce specific cell products called antibodies. Various cell subpopulations, often B-lymphocytes, can be defined, based on the different classes of immunoglobulins that they synthesize. D013154 Spleen An encapsulated lymphatic organ through which venous blood filters.
D013934 Thymectomy Surgical removal of the thymus gland. (Dorland, 28th ed) Thymectomies
D013947 Thymosin Thymosin. A family of heat-stable, polypeptide hormones secreted by the thymus gland. Their biological activities include lymphocytopoiesis, restoration of immunological competence and enhancement of expression of T-cell characteristics and function. They have therapeutic potential in patients having primary or secondary immunodeficiency diseases, cancer or diseases related to aging. Thymosin Fs,Thymosins
D013949 Thymus Extracts Extracts of the THYMUS GLAND that contain specific factors, peptides, and proteins with specific biological activities. Thymus Extract,Extract, Thymus,Extracts, Thymus
