A new method for percutaneous nephrostomy. 1976

L L Burnett, and R J Correa, and W H Bush

A new method of percutaneous nephrostomy using techniques to place a No. 12 French balloon catheter in the renal collecting system is described. Case reports demonstrate tumor palliation and temporary drainage to improve the very ill prior to definitive surgery. A translumbar aortogram catheter is placed lateral to paraspinous muscles and Dotter vascular dilators are used to allow insertion of the large balloon catheter.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007669 Kidney Calculi Stones in the KIDNEY, usually formed in the urine-collecting area of the kidney (KIDNEY PELVIS). Their sizes vary and most contains CALCIUM OXALATE. D007682 Kidney Pelvis The flattened, funnel-shaped expansion connecting the URETER to the KIDNEY CALICES. Renal Pelvis,Pelvis, Kidney,Pelvis, Renal
D002404 Catheterization Use or insertion of a tubular device into a duct, blood vessel, hollow organ, or body cavity for injecting or withdrawing fluids for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. It differs from INTUBATION in that the tube here is used to restore or maintain patency in obstructions. Cannulation,Cannulations,Catheterizations
D004322 Drainage The removal of fluids or discharges from the body, such as from a wound, sore, or cavity.
D006869 Hydronephrosis Abnormal enlargement or swelling of a KIDNEY due to dilation of the KIDNEY CALICES and the KIDNEY PELVIS. It is often associated with obstruction of the URETER or chronic kidney diseases that prevents normal drainage of urine into the URINARY BLADDER. Hydronephroses
D001027 Aortography Radiographic visualization of the aorta and its branches by injection of contrast media, using percutaneous puncture or catheterization procedures. Aortographies
D014517 Ureteral Obstruction Blockage in any part of the URETER causing obstruction of urine flow from the kidney to the URINARY BLADDER. The obstruction may be congenital, acquired, unilateral, bilateral, complete, partial, acute, or chronic. Depending on the degree and duration of the obstruction, clinical features vary greatly such as HYDRONEPHROSIS and obstructive nephropathy. D014547 Urinary Diversion Temporary or permanent diversion of the flow of urine through the ureter away from the URINARY BLADDER in the presence of a bladder disease or after cystectomy. There is a variety of techniques: direct anastomosis of ureter and bowel, cutaneous ureterostomy, ileal, jejunal or colon conduit, ureterosigmoidostomy, etc. (From Campbell's Urology, 6th ed, p2654) Ileal Conduit,Conduit, Ileal,Conduits, Ileal,Diversion, Urinary,Diversions, Urinary,Ileal Conduits,Urinary Diversions
