Effect of acetylcholine on melanophores of Rana tigrina. 1976

S K Bhattacharya, and A K Parikh, and P K Das

Acetylcholine produced melanin aggregation and blanching of skin colour in Rana tigrina, the common Indian frog. The effects were more prolonged in frogs pretreated with an anticholinesterase agent. Acetylcholine effects were not antagonized by either m-cholinolytic (atropine) or n-cholinolytic (pentolinium) agents, but were markedly inhibited by procaine. The results have been discussed in the light of the well-known membrane-stabilizing effect of procaine.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D008547 Melanophores Chromatophores (large pigment cells of fish, amphibia, reptiles and many invertebrates) which contain melanin. Short term color changes are brought about by an active redistribution of the melanophores pigment containing organelles (MELANOSOMES). Mammals do not have melanophores; however they have retained smaller pigment cells known as MELANOCYTES. Melanophore
D010425 Pentolinium Tartrate A nicotinic antagonist that has been used as a ganglionic blocking agent in hypertension. Pentolinium,Pentolonium Tartrate,Tartrate, Pentolinium,Tartrate, Pentolonium
D010830 Physostigmine A cholinesterase inhibitor that is rapidly absorbed through membranes. It can be applied topically to the conjunctiva. It also can cross the blood-brain barrier and is used when central nervous system effects are desired, as in the treatment of severe anticholinergic toxicity. Eserine
D010858 Pigmentation Coloration or discoloration of a part by a pigment. Pigmentations
D011343 Procaine A local anesthetic of the ester type that has a slow onset and a short duration of action. It is mainly used for infiltration anesthesia, peripheral nerve block, and spinal block. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p1016). Anuject,Geriocaine,Gerokit,Hewedolor-Procain,Lophakomp-Procain N,Novocain,Novocaine,Procain Braun,Procain Jenapharm,Procain Rödler,Procain Steigerwald,Procain curasan,Procaina Serra,Procaine Hydrochloride,Pröcaine chlorhydrate Lavoisier,Röwo Procain,procain-loges,Hydrochloride, Procaine
D011898 Ranidae The family of true frogs of the order Anura. The family occurs worldwide except in Antarctica. Frogs, True,Rana,Frog, True,True Frog,True Frogs
D002856 Chromatophores The large pigment cells of fish, amphibia, reptiles and many invertebrates which actively disperse and aggregate their pigment granules. These cells include MELANOPHORES, erythrophores, xanthophores, leucophores and iridiophores. (In algae, chromatophores refer to CHLOROPLASTS. In phototrophic bacteria chromatophores refer to membranous organelles (BACTERIAL CHROMATOPHORES).) Chromatophore
D005260 Female Females
D000109 Acetylcholine A neurotransmitter found at neuromuscular junctions, autonomic ganglia, parasympathetic effector junctions, a subset of sympathetic effector junctions, and at many sites in the central nervous system. 2-(Acetyloxy)-N,N,N-trimethylethanaminium,Acetilcolina Cusi,Acetylcholine Bromide,Acetylcholine Chloride,Acetylcholine Fluoride,Acetylcholine Hydroxide,Acetylcholine Iodide,Acetylcholine L-Tartrate,Acetylcholine Perchlorate,Acetylcholine Picrate,Acetylcholine Picrate (1:1),Acetylcholine Sulfate (1:1),Bromoacetylcholine,Chloroacetylcholine,Miochol,Acetylcholine L Tartrate,Bromide, Acetylcholine,Cusi, Acetilcolina,Fluoride, Acetylcholine,Hydroxide, Acetylcholine,Iodide, Acetylcholine,L-Tartrate, Acetylcholine,Perchlorate, Acetylcholine
