[Experiments on the toxicity of intra-ocular administered Gentamycin (author's transl)]. 1976

U Mester, and H J Stein

The compatibility with Gentamycin solution used for irrigation of the anterior chamber of the eye was studied in experiments performed on rabbits. The degree of damage was measured by counting the number of the undestroyed cells of the corneal endothelium after perfusion. We compared the number of undestroyed cells after perfusion with 0.25% Gentamycin solution, 0.50% Gentamycin solution and Ringer solution. The result of these experiments showed a clear reduction of the endothelial cells using a 0.50% solution of Gentamycin. On the other hand there was not found any considerable difference between the number of cells using a 0.25% solution of Gentamycin or using Ringer solution. Using both solutions there was only a very slight degree of damage to be observed.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007507 Therapeutic Irrigation The washing of a body cavity or surface by flowing water or solution for therapy or diagnosis. Douching,Lavage,Douchings,Irrigation, Therapeutic,Irrigations, Therapeutic,Lavages,Therapeutic Irrigations
D003315 Cornea The transparent anterior portion of the fibrous coat of the eye consisting of five layers: stratified squamous CORNEAL EPITHELIUM; BOWMAN MEMBRANE; CORNEAL STROMA; DESCEMET MEMBRANE; and mesenchymal CORNEAL ENDOTHELIUM. It serves as the first refracting medium of the eye. It is structurally continuous with the SCLERA, avascular, receiving its nourishment by permeation through spaces between the lamellae, and is innervated by the ophthalmic division of the TRIGEMINAL NERVE via the ciliary nerves and those of the surrounding conjunctiva which together form plexuses. D005839 Gentamicins A complex of closely related aminoglycosides obtained from MICROMONOSPORA purpurea and related species. They are broad-spectrum antibiotics, but may cause ear and kidney damage. They act to inhibit PROTEIN BIOSYNTHESIS. D000867 Anterior Chamber The space in the eye, filled with aqueous humor, bounded anteriorly by the cornea and a small portion of the sclera and posteriorly by a small portion of the ciliary body, the iris, and that part of the crystalline lens which presents through the pupil.
