OBJECTIVE This article reviews the literature on maxillary implant-supported overdentures. METHODS Retrospective studies and clinical reports comprise the majority of publications, with few prospective studies. RESULTS Maxillary implant-supported overdentures are associated with implant and prosthesis survival rates similar to those of fixed implant prostheses when patients are matched for bone quantity and quality. High failure rates are associated with extreme atrophy, poor bone quality, and the use of short implants, which represent situations in which overdentures are most commonly used. CONCLUSIONS Further research is required to elucidate the most appropriate implant number and distribution as well as the most favorable prosthetic constructions.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007575 Jaw, Edentulous The total absence of teeth from either the mandible or the maxilla, but not both. Total absence of teeth from both is MOUTH, EDENTULOUS. Partial absence of teeth in either is JAW, EDENTULOUS, PARTIALLY. Edentulous Jaw,Edentulous Jaws,Jaws, Edentulous
D008437 Maxilla One of a pair of irregularly shaped bones that form the upper jaw. A maxillary bone provides tooth sockets for the superior teeth, forms part of the ORBIT, and contains the MAXILLARY SINUS. Maxillae,Maxillary Bone,Bone, Maxillary,Bones, Maxillary,Maxillary Bones,Maxillas
D011446 Prospective Studies Observation of a population for a sufficient number of persons over a sufficient number of years to generate incidence or mortality rates subsequent to the selection of the study group. Prospective Study,Studies, Prospective,Study, Prospective

D001284 Atrophy Decrease in the size of a cell, tissue, organ, or multiple organs, associated with a variety of pathological conditions such as abnormal cellular changes, ischemia, malnutrition, or hormonal changes. Atrophies
D012189 Retrospective Studies Studies used to test etiologic hypotheses in which inferences about an exposure to putative causal factors are derived from data relating to characteristics of persons under study or to events or experiences in their past. The essential feature is that some of the persons under study have the disease or outcome of interest and their characteristics are compared with those of unaffected persons.
