Managing the neuropsychiatric symptoms of Parkinson's disease. 1998

Neuropsychiatric symptoms frequently complicate the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). Approximately 27% of PD patients are demented, and approximately 19% are cognitively impaired without being demented. These 46% of patients are prone to development of delirium when they take antiparkinsonian drugs. Approximately 40% of PD patients are depressed. The depression may be endogenous or exogenous, apathetic or agitated. Approximately 40% of PD patients are anxious or have panic attacks. The attacks may or may not be associated with depression. This article reviews the diagnosis of these symptoms and discusses their management.

D010300	Parkinson Disease	A progressive, degenerative neurologic disease characterized by a TREMOR that is maximal at rest, retropulsion (i.e. a tendency to fall backwards), rigidity, stooped posture, slowness of voluntary movements, and a masklike facial expression. Pathologic features include loss of melanin containing neurons in the substantia nigra and other pigmented nuclei of the brainstem. LEWY BODIES are present in the substantia nigra and locus coeruleus but may also be found in a related condition (LEWY BODY DISEASE, DIFFUSE) characterized by dementia in combination with varying degrees of parkinsonism.
