OBJECTIVE To evaluate surgical results, especially recurrence rate, and to register complications in patients treated for primary pterygium. METHODS Nineteen eyes treated with local excision and single application of Mitomycin C 0.3 mg/ml for 5 minutes. Pre and postoperative astigmatism was evaluated by automatic keratometry. Follow-up after one year. RESULTS Corneal recurrence was observed in one patient and limbal recurrence was seen in another, a total rate of 11%. Astigmatism was reduced. No complications were encountered. CONCLUSIONS The procedure is simple, with a low recurrence rate, and has not shown complications.
