Humans are among the most genetically variable species in existence. The advent of new genetic tools for analyzing this variation has uncovered even greater variability than previously recognized. These genetic data, available at multiple biological levels, are yielding new insights into population structure, population history, and evolutionary dynamics. This review highlights several issues in human diversity studies utilizing samples drawn from studies of South American populations.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D011506 Proteins Linear POLYPEPTIDES that are synthesized on RIBOSOMES and may be further modified, crosslinked, cleaved, or assembled into complex proteins with several subunits. The specific sequence of AMINO ACIDS determines the shape the polypeptide will take, during PROTEIN FOLDING, and the function of the protein. D004247 DNA A deoxyribonucleotide polymer that is the primary genetic material of all cells. Eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms normally contain DNA in a double-stranded state, yet several important biological processes transiently involve single-stranded regions. DNA, which consists of a polysugar-phosphate backbone possessing projections of purines (adenine and guanine) and pyrimidines (thymine and cytosine), forms a double helix that is held together by hydrogen bonds between these purines and pyrimidines (adenine to thymine and guanine to cytosine). D005075 Biological Evolution The process of cumulative change over successive generations through which organisms acquire their distinguishing morphological and physiological characteristics. Evolution, Biological
D005954 Glucosephosphate Dehydrogenase Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase,Dehydrogenase, Glucose-6-Phosphate,Dehydrogenase, Glucosephosphate,Glucose 6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000418 Albumins Water-soluble proteins found in egg whites, blood, lymph, and other tissues and fluids. They coagulate upon heating. Albumin
D013020 South America The southern continent of the Western Hemisphere, extending southward from the Colombia-Panama border.
D014644 Genetic Variation Genotypic differences observed among individuals in a population. Genetic Diversity,Variation, Genetic,Diversity, Genetic,Diversities, Genetic,Genetic Diversities,Genetic Variations,Variations, Genetic
