This article provides a survey on various aspects of drug-induced hepatic dysfunction, including practical considerations for handling patients with suspected drug-induced liver affection. The assessment of causality is discussed on the basis of liver enzyme abnormalities, the onset and course of the reaction, and the response to readministration of the drug. Issues on when to withdraw a suspected drug and how to prescribe potentially hepatotoxic drugs to patients with liver diseases are also presented.
