Study of neonatal gastric aspirate related to amniotic fluid and to the occurrence of the idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome. 1976

The lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio (L/S) has been shown to be of use in the prediction of the idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome (I.R.D.S) when performed on amniotic fluid. Gastric contents at birth consist mainly of amniotic fluid. Our study was designed to determine what the relationship was between the L/S ratios of amniotic fluid and gastric aspirate obtained at birth and to examine whether the L/S ratios of gastric aspirate was of any value in the prediction of I.R.D.S.

D012127 Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Newborn A condition of the newborn marked by DYSPNEA with CYANOSIS, heralded by such prodromal signs as dilatation of the alae nasi, expiratory grunt, and retraction of the suprasternal notch or costal margins, mostly frequently occurring in premature infants, children of diabetic mothers, and infants delivered by cesarean section, and sometimes with no apparent predisposing cause. D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000653 Amniotic Fluid A clear, yellowish liquid that envelopes the FETUS inside the sac of AMNION. In the first trimester, it is likely a transudate of maternal or fetal plasma. In the second trimester, amniotic fluid derives primarily from fetal lung and kidney. Cells or substances in this fluid can be removed for prenatal diagnostic tests (AMNIOCENTESIS). D013109 Sphingomyelins A class of sphingolipids found largely in the brain and other nervous tissue. They contain phosphocholine or phosphoethanolamine as their polar head group so therefore are the only sphingolipids classified as PHOSPHOLIPIDS. Sphingomyelin
D013270 Stomach An organ of digestion situated in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen between the termination of the ESOPHAGUS and the beginning of the DUODENUM. Stomachs
